Bournemouth has plenty to offer the more energetic visitor. This includes surfing, which has been popular for over 40 years. The waves can be ridden all along the bay and the sandy bottom and lack of dangerous currents make it especially safe. Body boarding is one of the most popular forms of surfing in Bournemouth as it is easy to learn and cheap! There are plans to build an artificial reef between Boscombe and Southbourne making a lagoon for safe swimming, snorkelling and of course "better surfing". One holidaymaker noticed the surfers one January and mistook them for a group of seals! For those keen on tennis there are a number of public courts such as Central Gardens or Shelley Park as well as the clubs West Hants or East Dorset or Southbourne. There is no shortage of golf courses and driving ranges from beginner level upwards. The public course at Meyrick park is set in beautiful woodlands and you can’t beat the view over Poole harbour at Studland Golf course. |

Bournemouth trace their roots back to 1890 and the formation of Boscombe St Johns Institute FC. When this club was wound up in 1899, several members, meeting under a gas lamp in Gladstone Road, agreed to form Boscombe FC. The new club played in the Bournemouth & District Junior League but rose to sufficient prominence that around the turn of the century they joined the Hampshire League. | In1910 Mr JE Cooper-Dean granted the club a long lease on some waste ground which was developed into the club's home, named Dean Court, after their benefactor. The club nickname of "The Cherries" dates from this period and is supposed to be a reference to the nearby fruit orchards on the Cooper-Dean estate. A rather less romantic version links the name to the cherry-red and white striped shirts the club wore. |

The club was ambitious and when the Football League formed a Third Division comprising the Southern League First Division clubs, Boscombe successfully applied to join the rump Southern League. Three years later, Boscombe successfully applied to join the League. To mark the occasion (and to attract wider support locally), the club changed its name to Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic, the longest name in League history. | The Cherries were to remain in the Third Division (South) until 1958 when they became founder members of the new (national) Third Division, where they remained until they were relegated in 1970. This represents the longest continuous membership of a single division in League history. In the mid Thirties the club adopted Arsenal style shirts but the new image failed to create an impact on the pitch. | |

Dorset and East Devon Coast World Heritage Site It is the only natural World Heritage site in Britain and ranks alongside the Great Barrier Reef and the Grand Canyon. This England's first natural World Heritage Site - it is known as The Jurassic Coast. It covers 95 miles of truly stunning coastline from East Devon to Dorset, with rocks recording 185 million years of the Earth's history. World Heritage Sites are places of ‘outstanding universal value' selected by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation). |
Old Harry Rocks Dorset is in an area of outstanding natural beauty, with a fantastic variety of sandy beaches, towering cliffs and unspoilt countryside. Old Harry Rocks are chalk stacks located directly east of Studland and to the north of Swanage in Dorset. Nearby and to the north are the larger towns of Poole and Bournemouth. The rocks are part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site of which they form the eastern end. It is also believed that the rocks were once connected to The Needles on the Isle of Wight. Boat trip excursions are available from Bournemouth pier in the summertime. |
