Dogs on the  beaches in Bournemouth

Bournemouth Between 1 May and 30 September dogs are allowed to the west of Durley Chine and east of Fisherman's Walk up to Hengistbury Head.  ‘Mans Best Friend - now an every day part of the community - can be a faithful companion and effective security guard.  However, he doesn’t always live up to his reputation and its not necessarily his fault. – it could be yours! The Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996 applies to all land in West Dorset District Council’s area. This makes it an offence punishable with a fine not exceeding level three (currently £1000) for a person in charge of a dog not to clean up when the dog has (without the land owner’s consent) fouled land in the open air. The land affected is land in the open air (including covered land which is open to the air on at least one side) and to which the public have access with or without payment, subject to the following exceptions: Carriageways/highways with a speed limit of more than 40 mph and the verges and footpaths running alongside them

Bournemouth During the off season dogs are able to run and play on all other beaches without a leash.
Remember! dogs need to be under effective voice control and you still need to carry a leash One of the critical measures used to decide which beaches become off leash areas is how diligent dog owners are about cleaning up after their pets. Dog owners should also carry a leash at all times, and ensure the dog remains in sight and is under effective voice control, not threaten other people or animals, and be subject to owner liability. And don't forget to take a couple of plastic bags so you can pick up any droppings. Some time ago a council campaign helped to bring about a quantum shift in dog owners' attitudes to cleaning up after their canines. But there is still a minority of owners who don't do the right thing when it comes to cleaning up dog poo. Scat, stools, poop, doggie do - whatever you call it - it's nasty. It's a problem for others walking on the beach and a contaminant if it's allowed into the bay

Bournemouth Land used for agricultural or woodlands,,,,,,,,Dogs are allowed outside these areas, but dog mess must be removed and owners can be fined £1,000 or issued with a fixed penalty of £50 for not clearing up after their pets. Signs displayed at each location show the dog friendly areas. Land which is mostly marshland, moor or health
Rural common land......The Council may instead in certain circumstances issue a Fixed Penalty notice in relation to an offence under this act.During the off season dogs are able to run and play on all other beaches without a leash.

Bournemouth Between the 1st May and 30th September inclusive, certain areas of beaches, paths and promenades (as shown below) will be controlled by the following byelaws: Failure to comply could incur a £1000 fine. Exercising your dog on the beach is a great way of enjoying the local environment and of keeping both you and your pet fit and healthy. However it is important to know about any restrictions which may apply at various times of the year to our local beaches. Remember to scoop any droppings to keep our bay and beaches clean

Throughout the year, no person in charge of a dog, other than a registered blind person, shall permit a dog to be on any road, including esplanades and revetments, unless the dog is held on a lead and is restrained from behaviour giving reasonable grounds for annoyance You are required by law to have a collar and tag bearing your name and address on your dog when out in a public place.
The Dog Wardens within West Dorset have a number of powers and duties. These are to:
Seize dogs which are stray, Notify owners (if known) of a seizure and inform them they have seven day limit in which to claim their dog Charge a fee before allowing the dog to be claimed Keep a register of stray and lost dogs Dispose of the dog after 7 days

Interaction between off-leash dogs and other animals and people is another factor. When they are off the leash, dogs need to be under effective control by their owners. If dogs are well trained and sufficiently socialised by responsible owners, then there should be minimal inconvenience to other beach users.
Dog owners face an on the fines for walking dogs on prohibited beaches, for dogs wandering at large, for not having dogs on leashes when they should be or for failing to pick up after their dog. Failure to register a dog attracts a large fine. It's now mandatory to carry bags or other devices and clean up after your dog.

Dog roundworm (Toxocara) can cause blindness and other health hazards, particularly to children. So follow this simple guide and play it safe.
Always carry a poop scoop or bag when exercising you dog and dispose of mess safely
Never leave mess in public places
Encourage dogs to go to the toilet at home where it can be taken care of safely
Prevent toddlers eating soil or grass
Wash hands after handling cats and dogs
Regularly worm your dog or cat
Never let pets into your bed
To comply with the byelaws, canine faeces must be removed and deposited in a receptacle provided by the Council for that purpose. It shall not be a reasonable excuse that a person in charge of a dog did not have with him or her any means of removal of the faeces.
