Home
win to end 2008 season

A second-half strike from Sam Vokes kept
Bournemouth's hopes of avoiding relegation alive as they ground out
a vital win over fellow strugglers Crewe.
Vokes pounced on a mistake by Crewe defender Daniel O'Donnell after
55 minutes to give the Cherries their sixth win in a row.
Crewe threatened little in the first half but Kenny Lunt went close
to an equaliser from distance late on.
But Bournemouth held on to move within a point of safety with one
game left.

BOURNEMOUTH :- Britain’s first recycling bins to
send a text message when they are almost full have been installed on Bournemouth
seafront.
Solar panels power two hydro-compaction rams which
crush the waste. Emma Sadiwskyj-Frewer, environmental manager for the local
council, said: “Eight times more recyclable waste can fit in the bins than
before. When it is near capacity, the bin sends a text message to one of the
seafront officers’ phones.”
Five hours of sunlight can power a bin for 28 days. The
bins were made by a waste company, Big Belly, and donated by Marks & Spencer.

A
little history
Bournemouth
does not have a long history like it's neighbours Poole and Christchurch. However there are many splendid Victorian buildings still to be seen. St. Peter's Church has the lovely peaceful graveyard in the centre of town where a few well known people were laid to rest. This includes Mary Wollstonecraft (author of Frankenstein and wife to the poet Shelley), Captain Tregonwell the founder of
Bournemouth, the conductor Sir Hubert Parry and the founder of British Columbia General Moody.
Bournemouth
is renown for its health giving properties due to the refreshing
pine air. Bournemouth tourism suggests trying the air for
yourselves.
Bournemouth has always been known for it's top class entertainment from The Beatles, Morecambe and Wise, Ella Fitzgerald to more present day entertainers Billy Connolly, Ronan Keating. Lord of the Dance and
Lesley Garrett. There is always something for everyone from Plays on the Pier to Ice shows, Circuses. Fairground rides to watching the fireworks from the sea or 500 foot up in the air!!
Bournemouth has been host to many important visitors over the years. Famous names from the past include Oscar Wilde, Gladstone, Disraeli and H.G. Wells. The Empress Eugenie of France was one of many royal visitors but she is best remembered for the candle lighting ceremony which is still continued today.
Tony Hancock grew up at his parent's
hostelry in Gervis Road and film star Stewart Grainger often visited his mother in nearby Grove Road.
A little more history
The Russell- Cotes Museum was the home of Merton and Anne Russell-Cotes and it contains a fascinating collection from their extensive travels. It is free to visit the museum and it has just been totally refurbished back to it's Victorian glory.
Other fine Victoriana include the impressive Town Hall at the Central Gardens which had been the Mont Dore. The Royal Bath by the Russell-Cotes Museum was the first hotel built in
Bournemouth. Captain Tregonwell's home is also an hotel and many of the fine Victorian Villas have been converted to hotels and guest houses.
Many establishments have their stories to tell over the years from famous visitors, ghostly hauntings to the billeting of the service men and women during the Second World War.
Although the
Fifties, Sixties and Seventies were the golden days of British seaside holidays Bournemouth has not stood still. Bournemouth is a busy cosmopolitan town playing host to political and other conferences, language students, clubbers, shoppers, and people just enjoying themselves whilst still having one of the best beaches in the world!

ASTRONOMERS have found an asteroid that appears to be on a collision course with
Earth.
It has been described as the most threatening object yet detected in space.
A preliminary orbit suggests that 2002 NT7 could strike the planet on February 1, 2019.
The BBC reports astronomers have given NT7 a threat rating on the Palermo technical scale of 0.06, making it the first object to be given a positive value.
Although they say it merits attention, they expect more observations to show it is not on an Earth-intersecting trajectory. The asteroid is estimated to be about two kilometres wide, large enough to cause continent-wide devastation on Earth. It was first seen on the night of July 5 by the Linear Observatory's automated sky survey programme in New Mexico.
Dr Benny Peiser, of Liverpool John Moores University, told BBC News Online: "This asteroid has now become the most threatening object in the short history of asteroid detection".But he added: "This unique event should not diminish the fact that additional observations in coming weeks will almost certainly - we hope - eliminate the current threat."Dr Donald Yeomans, from the US space agency's (Nasa) Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, said: "The error in our knowledge of where NT7 will be on February 1, 2019, is large, several tens of millions of
kilometres."
If it did hit Earth would it affect your choice in coming to Bournemouth??
